Flower Mound residents who want to host a block party for National Night Out must register by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The town's civic alert announced the deadline for the annual event, which runs 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. Neighborhoods across the country participate each year in an evening focused on crime prevention and building connections between residents and local law enforcement.

Texas holds National Night Out on the first Tuesday in October rather than the first Tuesday in August, when most other states celebrate, according to the National Association of Town Watch, which sponsors the program. The town's registration page says nearly 38 million Americans take part each year.

What registered neighborhoods get

Neighborhoods that register can compete for the annual Flower Mound Neighborhood of the Year award. Registered parties may also get drop-in visits from Flower Mound Police Department (FMPD) officers, Flower Mound Fire Department (FMFD) crews and Town Council members. The town will provide street barricades on request.

The FMPD promoted the event in a Facebook video that had drawn more than 8,500 views, encouraging residents to gather neighbors, pick a location and sign up before the deadline closes.

Highland Village also participates

Highland Village is also listed as a participating Texas city in the National Night Out program, according to the National Association of Town Watch. Registration details for Highland Village were not available.
