A Flower Mound woman faces deportation to Mexico after a May 8 traffic stop escalated into federal immigration detention.

Lourdes Minerva Coronado was pulled over by Flower Mound police for driving with a suspended license and no registration, a Class C traffic offense, Fox 4 first reported on Wednesday, Sept. 23. After her arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was contacted, and Coronado was taken into ICE custody.

An immigration judge denied Coronado's bond request on July 2, classifying her as a flight risk. On Sept. 8, a judge ordered her removed to Mexico.

She has until Oct. 2 to appeal.

Her daughter, Karen Gonzalez, told Fox 4 the family is racing to find and pay an attorney before that deadline.

"She had no criminal history. She wasn't doing anything wrong," Gonzalez told Fox 4. "So it was what we thought would be a simple case."

Gonzalez told Fox 4 her mother had lived in the United States for more than 30 years and had been approved for a work permit before she was detained. ICE stated Coronado entered the country illegally at "an unknown time and location" and has no lawful immigration status. The type of work authorization the family referenced has not been specified.

ICE said it does not remove individuals while a timely appeal remains pending.

The Flower Mound Police Department has not publicly commented on the stop or how ICE was notified.

Denton County's expanded ICE agreement

Coronado's arrest came months after Denton County expanded its cooperation with ICE. In January, Denton County Commissioner's Court approved adding the Task Force Model to its existing 287(g) agreement, a federal program that deputizes local officers to enforce immigration law, as The Cross Timbers Gazette reported.

The expansion allows select Denton County Sheriff's Office deputies trained by ICE to identify and detain people they believe are violating immigration law, even without pending local charges. The county had already agreed to a 287(g) jail-operations arrangement in April 2025.

The specific process by which ICE was notified after Coronado's Flower Mound arrest has not been publicly disclosed. Coronado's Oct. 2 appeal deadline is eight days away, and no attorney has been publicly named as representing her.
