Flower Mound voters approved four more years of dedicated street-maintenance funding Tuesday, Nov. 3, passing Proposition A with 75.9% support.
Unofficial results showed 26,296 votes in favor and 8,348 against, according to the Cross Timbers Gazette. The results remain unofficial pending the Flower Mound Town Council’s canvass.
What the tax pays for
The measure renews an existing quarter-cent sales tax dedicated to street maintenance. Flower Mound’s combined sales tax rate remains 8.25%.
First approved in 2007, the tax supports pavement reconstruction, concrete panel replacements, asphalt overlays, pothole patching, crack sealing and snow and ice removal. It also pays for personnel who perform those services, according to the town’s street-maintenance page.
Since voters last renewed the tax in 2022, $19.8 million has supported maintenance, reconstruction, personnel and 16 major street projects.
Those projects include Colonial Drive Reconstruction Phase II, Timber Creek Road panel replacement and Wichita Trail reconstruction.
Double Oak rejects alcohol sales
Double Oak voters rejected a proposal to allow alcohol sales, with 1,020 voting against and 814 in favor—a 55.62% rejection, the Gazette reported.
The proposal drew attention because of a planned grocery store, retail and restaurant development at FM 407 and Simmons Road. Alcohol sales could influence which businesses locate there, but the referendum did not decide whether to approve the development. That requires separate land-use approvals.
A citizen-led petition effort collected 680 signatures to put alcohol sales on the ballot. Former Mayor Bernie Carrico, chairman of Concerned Citizens for Double Oak Growth, told the Gazette it would be at least another year before the proposal could return to voters.
Other street-tax votes
Bartonville and Justin also considered renewals of existing street-maintenance sales taxes.
As of 11 p.m. election night, both measures were leading comfortably, with 82.35% support in Bartonville and 71.59% in Justin, according to the Gazette.
