Marcus High School honored four new inductees into its Hall of Family during a sideline ceremony at the homecoming game against Braswell on Friday, Oct. 16.
The school named three award categories and four honorees in an Instagram post after the game. Each inductee was joined by family members on the field.
Jason Curlett, Class of 1994, and Lizzie Amick, Class of 1998, received the Distinguished Alumni Award. The award goes to former Marcus students "whose achievements, character and service to others serve as inspiration and role models to today's students," according to the school's Hall of Fame page.
Melisande Maddox Santos, a Latin teacher at Marcus from 1992 to 2025, received the Distinguished Service Award. That honor recognizes former faculty for their contributions to the school. In a Lewisville ISD senior spotlight, 2025 MHS graduate Varnika Dalal named Santos as the teacher who impacted her most, saying Santos "has gone above and beyond to make sure every student feels seen and heard."
Fred Placke received the Distinguished Community Service Award posthumously. His children and family accepted the honor.
Placke died on Feb. 10, 2020. He was a teacher at Marcus, where his peers chose him as Teacher of the Year in 1997, according to a Cross Timbers Gazette column he wrote in 2010. His obituary described his years at Marcus as the most rewarding of his career.
Placke went on to serve 12 years on the Lewisville ISD school board, including a term as board president. A memorial scholarship in his name is administered through the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation. A scholarship recipient, 2023 MHS graduate McNiel, said the award made her "feel like the community believed in my dream of being a teacher," according to the foundation's website.
The school's website refers to the program as the "MHS Hall of Fame," while social media posts from the school used the name "Hall of Family." Nominations are accepted each year. Residents can contact Chris Porter at 469-948-7017 for nomination information.
Marcus travels to Little Elm on Friday, Oct. 23, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
