Flower Mound and Highland Village residents can donate blood at two nearby drives over the next week, as North Texas faces what the American Red Cross calls only its second national blood supply crisis.
Carter BloodCare will bring its mobile donor bus to two locations along the FM 407 corridor, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported.
The first drive takes place Sunday, Aug. 16, from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 6500 Crawford Road in Argyle. The Knights of Columbus Ralph Cerny Council #12553 is sponsoring the event, with Tim Schoendorf coordinating. Donors can book a slot through Carter BloodCare's portal or call 940-391-1397.
A second drive rolls into the Chick-fil-A parking lot at Harvest Town Center, 1218 FM 407 E., on Friday, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. That location sits just minutes from both Flower Mound and Highland Village. Walk-ins may be accepted at both drives as scheduling allows, but Carter BloodCare encourages appointments in advance.
Why it matters now
The Red Cross declared a national blood supply crisis in early August, KERA News reported. The organization has done this only once before, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"If there were just three more donors that showed up at each blood drive this summer, then we could end the crisis and it would stabilize the blood supply," Linda Braddy, CEO of the American Red Cross North Texas region, told KERA on Aug. 4. "So people may think, I'm just one person, but one person makes a big difference."
Braddy said summer 2026 has been the most challenging for donations in four years, citing extreme heat and widespread foodborne illnesses that have caused donors to cancel appointments across the region.
Carter BloodCare was in urgent need of O-negative, B-negative and A-negative blood types as of early August, according to KERA's reporting. No types were listed as critical, but the supply remains tight.
What to know
Blood donations collected at both drives support patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment, trauma care and other medical emergencies throughout North Texas. The entire process takes about an hour.
No hospital visit required.
