Republic Services will pick up old electronics and household hazardous waste directly from Flower Mound residents' front porches, the Town of Flower Mound announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The pickup covers a broad list of items. Accepted e-waste includes televisions, monitors, VCRs, DVD players, computers, laptops, tablets, smart devices including phones and watches, gaming consoles, keyboards, mice, printers, scanners, copiers, telephones, fax machines, microwave ovens, CD players, stereos and related cables, according to the town's program page.
Household hazardous materials also qualify. The accepted list includes latex and oil-based paint, paint thinners, gasoline, solvents, cooking oils, automotive fluids, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, aerosols, mercury equipment, batteries, fluorescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs, HID lamps, pool chemicals, acidic and basic cleaners, resins, epoxy, medical sharps and empty propane, helium and Freon cylinders, among other items.
Not everything qualifies. The town lists commercially generated waste, radioactive compounds, smoke detectors, ammunition, tires, asbestos, pharmaceuticals, biological waste, dry paint, and leaking or unidentified containers as unacceptable.
Republic Services operates the program under its agreement with the town.
How to schedule
Residents can request collection by filling out an online form on the town's website, calling Republic Services at 469-451-3713, or emailing [email protected]. The town says residents will receive a response within 24 hours, excluding weekends. Pickup schedules may vary depending on demand.
After scheduling, Republic Services mails a kit containing bags, labels, zip ties and instructions. Hazardous materials must be in their original containers or labeled using the provided kit, sealed tight, and no larger than five gallons. Only like items go in each bag. Do not mix cleaners with gasoline or paint with light bulbs.
Electronic items do not need bags or labels.
If a container leaks, residents should place it in a plastic bag and reinforce it with duct tape. For spills, call 469-451-3713 for additional bags and/or a new pickup schedule.
Collection day
Items must be placed on the front porch, visible from the street, by 7 a.m. Republic Services crews collect between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Unlabeled items will not be picked up.
Items can also go in front of a garage door, as long as the garage door is not located in an alley. Residents with gated entrances or limited street visibility should call 469-451-3713 to arrange access.
