Flower Mound residents looking for ways to pitch in this fall have several options open, from advisory board seats with an Aug. 30 deadline to year-round roles at the library, senior center and local parks.

Mayor Cheryl Moore framed the call in her August monthly message, published Sunday, Aug. 9, tying it to the energy of a new school year. Lewisville ISD students returned to class Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Argyle ISD students started Tuesday, Aug. 11.

"There is a shift into higher gear, whether you're a student beginning a new school year, a parent juggling new schedules, or a resident looking for ways to become more involved," Moore wrote. "This is a time to reconnect!"

Board and commission seats

The town is accepting applications for its Animal Services Board, Historical Commission, Parks Board, Planning and Zoning Commission and other advisory panels through Aug. 30. Moore wrote that the positions give residents "a direct voice in helping to shape the future of our Town." Applications are at flowermound.gov/boardsandcommissions.

General volunteer program

Separately, the town's ongoing volunteer program places residents age 15 and older in six service areas: the Library, Animal Services, Senior Center, Town Secretary's Office, Park Services and the Gibson Grant Log Cabin. Roles vary. Commitments range from one-time projects to seasonal or ongoing shifts, and all applicants must pass an annual background check.

Flower Mound maintains 58 parks and 75 miles of hiking and biking trails, much of it supported by volunteer labor.

Groups looking for a quick outdoor project can also sign up to paint fire hydrants; the town provides paint and brushes.

Residents without home internet can use a computer at the Flower Mound Public Library, 3030 Broadmoor Ln., to browse roles and submit applications through the town's MyImpact portal.

Crossing guards needed

The Flower Mound Police Department is also looking for crossing guards ahead of the school year. Details and applications are at flowermound.gov/crossingguards.

With LISD's new bell schedule, school zones near middle schools are now active weekdays from 7:20–8:30 a.m. and 3:25–4:20 p.m. High school zones run 7:55–9:05 a.m. and 4–4:55 p.m.
