Firefighters from four departments battled a blaze at a three-story lakeside home on Edgewater Drive in Highland Village on Wednesday, Aug. 5, and dispatch records show the first crews on scene nearly exhausted their water supply before reinforcements arrived.

The Highland Village Fire Department responded shortly before 4 p.m. after a dispatch call reported smoke coming from the large home near the Hickory Creek arm of Lewisville Lake, reporter Micah Pearce wrote for the Cross Timbers Gazette. The fire grew in severity after HVFD arrived, prompting mutual-aid responses from Lewisville Fire Department, Lake Cities Fire Department and Flower Mound Fire Department.

Dispatch call information indicated the initial crews nearly ran out of water as those reinforcements reached the scene. The available records do not specify whether the near-shortage involved tanker capacity, hydrant flow or water main access.

The blaze was brought under control around 4:30 p.m., roughly 30 minutes after the first response.

No one was injured. Officials confirmed the residents were not home at the time and no pets were inside.

Cause under investigation

Highland Village's fire marshal is investigating the cause. No determination had been announced as of Thursday, Aug. 6.

The home sits near the shore of the Hickory Creek arm of Lewisville Lake. The city's capital improvement plan lists ongoing projects to extend water service to other lakeside areas that currently lack city water mains, though no public record confirms whether those projects are related to the water supply challenge crews faced Wednesday.

The fire marshal's investigation has no announced timeline for completion.
