Hughey led by 17,944 votes with 95,480 votes counted and 52 of 53 reporting units in as of Nov. 4 at 1:24 a.m. CST.

What was at stake

Justices of the peace handle evictions, small claims, debt cases and Class C misdemeanors such as traffic citations, according to Travis County government records. They also set bail as magistrates and preside over peace bond hearings.

The Precinct 4 court sits at the Southwest Courthouse in Flower Mound, serving residents across the southern portion of Denton County.

The key issues:

  • Hughey said in a candidate questionnaire that he has 30 years of legal experience as an attorney, prosecutor and judge, and cited his court's efficiency and record of staying under budget.
  • Robertson, on his campaign website, said the court should focus on helping people resolve problems rather than trapping them in fines and debt for small offenses.
  • Both candidates said they would treat all parties fairly, though they framed the goal differently. Hughey emphasized applying the law as written. Robertson emphasized equal access regardless of income or background.

A little history

Hughey has served as Precinct 4 justice of the peace since January 2019, according to Ballotpedia. He described himself as an eight-year incumbent in a candidate questionnaire. He also serves as presiding municipal judge for the Town of Northlake and associate judge for the City of North Richland Hills, according to the same questionnaire.

Robertson is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served from 2011 to 2016, according to Ballotpedia. He holds a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University and a graduate degree from the University of Arizona. He also runs a photography and media business in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to his campaign website.
