Republican David Wylie had 58,161 votes, or 55.3%, to Democrat Stephanie Draper's 46,919 votes, or 44.7%, in the Denton County Commissioner Precinct 4 race, according to unofficial results from Denton County Elections. The count was not complete, with 105,080 votes counted and 66 of 67 reporting units reporting as of 1:24 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4. Wylie led by 11,242 votes, a margin of 10.6 percentage points.

The Denton Record-Chronicle reported Nov. 4 that Wylie had secured the Precinct 4 commissioner seat based on final but unofficial results from the Denton County Elections Administration.

As we reported Nov. 2, the two candidates squared off for the open Precinct 4 seat.

What was at stake

Precinct 4 covers much of southwest Denton County, including Flower Mound, Argyle, Bartonville, Double Oak, Trophy Club and Roanoke, according to the Denton County government website. The Commissioners Court sets the county's property tax rate, approves its budget, oversees road construction and maintenance, and reviews subdivision platting in rural areas.

The key issues:

  • Wylie's campaign website listed balanced development that protects property values and quality of life as a priority.
  • Draper's campaign listed investing in local infrastructure to support the county's growing population, according to her candidate profile.
  • The Commissioners Court also sets precinct boundaries and authorizes all county contracts.

The winner will help set the county's tax rate and budget for a fast-growing part of Denton County that includes several Flower Mound and Highland Village neighborhoods.

A little history

Wylie, an Argyle resident and systems architect, ran as one of four Republicans in the March 3 primary. Incumbent Dianne Edmondson, who won the Precinct 4 seat in 2018 and again in 2022, also sought the Republican nomination, along with Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth and Bartonville's Valerie Roehrs, according to the Cross Timbers Gazette. Draper was the only Democrat to file for the seat.

Wylie listed service as a Republican precinct chair and election judge since 1990 and as president of the Argyle Municipal Development District since 2023, according to his primary questionnaire in the Cross Timbers Gazette.

What's next

The results remain unofficial until the canvass is complete. Under state law, the local canvass for the Nov. 3 election must occur no later than Nov. 17, according to a Texas Secretary of State election advisory. Late-arriving mail ballots, provisional ballots and overseas ballots may still be counted before then. In Texas, a losing candidate can request a recount only if they lost by 10% or less of the total votes cast, according to the Texas Tribune.
