Liberty Christian School's football field now carries the name of the coach who turned the program into a TAPPS powerhouse.
The Argyle private school unveiled "Witten Family Field at Warrior Stadium" on Friday, Aug. 21, before the Warriors' season opener against Midland Christian, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported. The Witten family was in attendance as the new name appeared along the sideline.
Jason Witten, the Dallas Cowboys' all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, coached Liberty Christian for five seasons after retiring from a 17-year NFL career. He left in January for a tight ends coaching job at the University of Oklahoma, but not before compiling a 44-7 record over his final four years and delivering back-to-back TAPPS state championships in 2023 and 2024.
His 2023 squad went undefeated, a first in program history, earning Witten the Whataburger Coach of the Year award from the Cowboys organization. He also received TAPPS State Coach of the Year that season and a nomination for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year.
The school said the honor extends beyond football. In its announcement, Liberty Christian credited the Witten family's 15-year connection to the school, saying Jason, his wife Michelle and their family "helped make Friday nights a gathering place for students, families, alumni and friends."
Cooper Witten, Jason's son and a senior four-star linebacker committed to Oklahoma, suited up for the Warriors on the newly named field. His older brother CJ also played in the program.
When Witten announced his departure for OU in January, he wrote on Instagram that he was "deeply grateful to the administration and Liberty community" and added, "I will always be a Liberty Christian Warrior."
The dedication came on a wild night of football. Liberty Christian fell to Midland Christian 66-63 in new head coach Josh Martin's debut. Martin, who has more than 15 years of coaching experience, came to the Warriors from the University of Nebraska, where he served as an assistant special teams coach.
The Warriors travel to No. 18 Celina on Friday, Sept. 4.
