Carlos Shelton, 65, killed his wife and adult son inside their Flower Mound home before taking his own life, police confirmed.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the deaths of Elida Shelton, 63, and Brian Shelton, 27, as homicides and Carlos Shelton's death as a suicide, according to an official update from the Town of Flower Mound posted Sept. 25. All three were family members who lived together at the residence in the 10700 block of Sunrise Circle.
Flower Mound Police Department (FMPD) officers discovered the three bodies on Sept. 23 at approximately 10:43 a.m. after responding to the home for a welfare check. Two of the residents had not reported to work, and family members had been unable to reach them.
Based on its investigation, the FMPD's Criminal Investigations Division determined Carlos Shelton was responsible for the deaths of Elida and Brian Shelton. Police said they are not seeking any outstanding suspects and that there is no known threat to the public.
Detectives remained at the scene for nearly 12 hours processing evidence, NBC DFW reported. Deputy Chief Henry Lucio told the station on Sept. 23 that investigators believed the deaths were an isolated incident.
Police said Sept. 24 that preliminary information pointed to a double homicide and suicide involving a husband, wife and adult son, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle. The medical examiner's findings confirmed that assessment.
Police have not confirmed a motive. Jose Zamarippa, who is married to Carlos and Elida Shelton's daughter, told FOX 4 in a Sept. 25 interview that Carlos Shelton had been dealing with expensive medical bills and had become withdrawn before the incident.
"I know he had a lot of medical bills and half of the stuff he paid was going to that," Zamarippa told FOX 4. "With all the things going on, high prices, I guess he got really overwhelmed and decided to do that."
Zamarippa also said Brian Shelton had just completed training to become a ministry leader at his church.
