The Denton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers using a lookalike website to convince people they have active arrest warrants.
Callers direct residents to the fraudulent site and instruct them to enter their names to search for warrants, the Cross Timbers Gazette reported Oct. 29, citing a sheriff’s office social media warning.
The imitation site uses the address Dentoncountysheriff.org. Officials said it resembles the agency’s legitimate page, but its listed phone numbers are not associated with Denton County.
Residents should use the official sheriff’s office website, hosted on the county’s dentoncounty.gov domain. Anyone concerned about a possible warrant can call the agency directly at 940-349-1600.
The sheriff’s office warned against callers who claim someone has a warrant, direct them to a suspicious verification website or pressure them to act immediately. Residents should not provide personal or financial information or send money in response to threats of arrest.
“Scammers rely on fear, urgency and convincing look-a-like websites,” the agency said, according to the Gazette. “Stop, verify and protect yourself.”
Officials advised residents to hang up on suspicious calls and verify any claim using contact information obtained independently from an official government website.
