Flower Mound and Marcus carry 1-0 records into Week 2, but computer projections peg both squads as road underdogs against unbeaten opponents.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football, in partnership with PigskinPrep.com, released its Week 2 projections on Wednesday, Sept. 2, covering all 726 Texas high school football games. The model favors Keller Timber Creek by 10 points over Flower Mound and Arlington Martin by 3 over Marcus.
The Jaguars kick off at Timber Creek at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. Marcus travels to Arlington to face Martin later this week.
Flower Mound (1-0) at Keller Timber Creek (1-0)
Flower Mound earned its Week 1 win the hard way. Trailing McKinney Boyd 24-21 in the fourth quarter on Aug. 28, quarterback Baron Sampson led a 98-yard scoring drive, connecting with Mike Miles on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 49 seconds left to seal a 28-24 victory. Wyatt Lejeune added a 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Timber Creek opened with a 27-25 win over South Grand Prairie, according to Dallas Morning News scores. Falcons receiver H Howard posted 127 receiving yards in the opener, landing on the Dallas Morning News list of top Week 1 performers.
The 10-point spread is the wider of the two local projections. A preseason district preview from Inside High School Sportsprojected Flower Mound seventh in its district, so the Jaguars are already playing above expectations after the comeback win over Boyd.
Marcus (1-0) at Arlington Martin (1-0)
The Marauders opened with fireworks. Senior running back Andrew Emmert rushed for 67 yards and scored four touchdowns, including the overtime game-winner on a 2-yard run, as Marcus beat Justin Northwest 41-38 in overtime on Aug. 28 at Marauder Stadium. Senior quarterback Cash Davis completed 14 of 22 passes for 219 yards in his first varsity start. Caleb Steen scored on a 55-yard punt return, and Gavin Lewis returned a blocked punt 47 yards for another touchdown.
Arlington Martin presents a stiffer test. The Warriors beat Mansfield 38-35 in Week 1, powered by running back Javian Jones-Priest, who rushed for 184 yards, and receiver Chancellor Tealer, who added 139 receiving yards. Both landed among the top Dallas-area performers.
The model's 3-point margin makes this the tighter matchup on paper. Marcus entered the season having lost its starting quarterback to transfer, but Davis threw for 219 yards and a touchdown in his debut against Northwest.
Flower Mound faces the first test Thursday night at Timber Creek. Marcus follows with its trip to Arlington Martin, where Jones-Priest and the Warriors' ground game will be waiting.
