Two new Argyle High School stadiums will rise above Flower Mound's 35-foot height limit after the Planning and Zoning Commission approved exceptions on a tiebreaking vote Monday, Sept. 14.

The baseball stadium's press box will top out at 37 feet, 1 inch. The softball stadium will reach 36 feet, 7 inches. Both exceed the town ordinance that caps structures at 35 feet or three stories on the property.

Chairman Gregory Schultz broke a 3-3 deadlock to approve the request. The decision is final and does not require Town Council action.

The stadiums, south of Canyon Falls Drive on the 106-acre Argyle High School campus, are part of a $29 million bond package voters approved in 2025, the North Texas Sun reported. The baseball field will seat 750. The softball bleachers will hold 536. The site plan also includes a batting cage and an 11,525-square-foot field house.

Commissioners Scott Langley, Todd Bayuk and Michelle Jackson voted against the exception.

Bayuk, who lives in Canyon Falls, said he receives frequent emails from residents about noise from the existing Argyle High School football stadium. He questioned why the district placed the new stadiums on the east side of the property, facing northeast toward Canyon Falls homes.

"The challenge I have is they did a great job designing it … I just wish they had looked at other portions of the property to put it because there are some areas where this would've sit very well and it would've mitigated the impact it has on residents of the local community," Bayuk said at the meeting.

Sean Plunkett of PBK Architects said the scoreboard speaker system would be placed near centerfield and aimed at the stands, directing audio toward fans rather than the neighborhood. Bayuk said the response was not adequate.

Langley said he believes ordinances should be followed for consistency but acknowledged he would not rule out exceptions in every case.

Schultz described the proposal as "sharp" and "well thought out." He said noise bleed is unavoidable near any large sports venue.

The Argyle High School property has already received five height exceptions. The football stadium's press box stands 105 feet tall. A fine arts building reaches 56 feet, 6 inches. A gymnasium, indoor activity center and classroom wing also exceed the 35-foot cap.

In December 2025, the same commission recommended denial of a 24-foot-high sign on the football stadium's press box, the North Texas Sun reported. The Town Council overrode that recommendation with a supermajority vote.

The commission also recommended approval of a separate roof-pitch waiver for the stadiums. That request will go to the Town Council for a vote, though no date has been set.
