Texas Health Resources will offer free flu shots Oct. 2 at a Flower Mound-area mosque, part of a clinic series requiring no insurance or congregation membership.
The Flower Mound clinic runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Islamic Association of Lewisville/Flower Mound, 3430 Peters Colony Road. Shots are available to adults and children older than 9. Children need parental consent.
The series, first reported by the Denton Record-Chronicle, is run through Texas Health's Faith Community Nursing Program, an annual effort connecting faith congregations with health resources. More than 70 volunteer nurses serve more than 50 faith communities across North Texas through the program, according to Texas Health Resources.
Caryn Paulos, the program's director, told the Record-Chronicle that hosting clinics at houses of worship removes common barriers to vaccination, including lack of insurance, transportation and time.
"Some people work Monday through Friday and can't get away from work to go get that vaccine," Paulos said.
The clinics come after a severe 2025-2026 flu season across the region. In North Texas, Children's Health recorded 1,090 flu cases during the week of Dec. 21, 2025, a 63% jump from the prior week, CBS Texas reported in early January. Statewide, more than 30% of specimens tested by Texas hospital labs came back positive for influenza by late January 2026, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). The state agency reported 3,195 pneumonia and influenza deaths in Texas through Feb. 4, 2026. Nationally, the CDC tallied more than 30,000 lab-confirmed flu hospitalizations for the season, with the hospitalization rate ranking as the third highest at that point since 2010-11.
Paulos told the Record-Chronicle that flu vaccines no longer contain a live virus and that vaccinated people who do catch the flu later often experience a less severe illness.
The broader clinic series begins Sunday, Sept. 20, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton. Additional dates at Denton-area locations include:
- Sunday, Oct. 4, 9–11 a.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Oak St., Denton
- Tuesday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Pink for Prevention Event, Denton County Courthouse Amphitheater, 1 Courthouse Drive, Denton
- Saturday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Morse Street Baptist Church, 921 Morse St., Denton
- Saturday, Oct. 24, 8–10:30 a.m. at Southmont Baptist Church, 2801 Pennsylvania Drive, Denton
The Oct. 2 Flower Mound clinic is the only date in the series at a Flower Mound address.
